The kitchen is led by chefs Elliott and Kelly Townsend, whose menu combines New Nordic influences with Southern California ingredients. The newest addition to the list and perhaps the most understated. Café Dawny is a family-owned café founded by Rich Barton and inspired by his grandmother, bringing authentic New Zealand café culture to Carlsbad Village.
The menu focuses on traditional savory pies, house-made quiches, and specialty coffee sourced through Ripple Specialty Coffee, a small-batch roasting program connected to Barton’s New Zealand heritage and roasted locally in California. The café also supports marine conservation efforts, with a portion of coffee sales contributing to pilot whale rescue initiatives in New Zealand. Currently operating during morning and early afternoon hours, it’s an ideal stop before exploring the Village or heading to the beach.
