5 Best Taco Spots in Encinitas: A Local’s Guide to North County’s Taco Scene

If you live in Encinitas long enough, you develop strong opinions about tacos. The 101 corridor alone has more legitimate spots than most cities have restaurants, and the spread runs from old-school after-surf burrito counters to chef-driven kitchens making everything from scratch. We’ve eaten at all of them more times than we’d admit to. Here are the five we keep coming back to.

This is a working list for anyone exploring the Encinitas, California (92024) food scene, whether you live here, you’re thinking about a move to North County San Diego, or you’re just down for the day and want to eat well. The good news: you can’t really lose at any of these. The longer answer: each one has its moment.

Crack Taco Shop (Leucadia) – 106 Leucadia Blvd

The newer gem on the list, and the one that converts skeptics fastest. The house-made tortillas alone are worth the trip, and the tri-tip taco is the move. They keep the ingredients clean (seed oil free, beef tallow and olive oil), the salsas are dialed, and the breakfast burrito has quietly become a north Encinitas weekend ritual. A short walk to Beacon’s if you want to eat on the sand.

The Taco Stand (Downtown Encinitas) – 642 S Coast Hwy 101

The one with the line out the door, and yes, the line is worth it. Born in Tijuana before it landed on the 101, The Taco Stand is where we send out-of-town friends when they ask for “the best tacos.” Order the Adobada with the pineapple al pastor crown, the Camaron for spicy shrimp done right, and the Mar y Tierra if you want to ruin yourself on one taco. Tight indoor space, back patio when the weather plays along.

Haggo’s Organic Taco (Leucadia) – 1302 N Coast Hwy 101

The elevated, organic, surprisingly still casual option, and a Leucadia institution. Vegan and gluten-free choices that are actually good (not just there for box-checking), four house-made salsas, and a sommelier-owner with a real wine list. The Surf and Turf burrito gets called “the best burrito you will ever have” by people who’ve had a lot of burritos. We agree. Closed Mondays.

Juanita’s Taco Shop (Downtown Encinitas) – 290 N Coast Hwy 101

The 30-plus-year classic and the answer to “where’s the after-surf carnitas burrito.” Juanita’s has been here long enough to outlast trends, renovations, and most of the surf shops that used to sit next door. The carnitas is the headline, the breakfast burritos hold up, and the bench out front has seen every kind of Encinitas local for three decades. Bring cash if you can.

City Tacos (Downtown Encinitas) – 1031 S Coast Hwy 101

The creative one. City Tacos started in North Park and crossed the freeway with intent, and the menu reads like a chef’s playground. The Queso Birria taco is the standout, the Mexicali is a sleeper, and the dog-friendly patio is one of the better spots downtown for sitting with a beer and decompressing. Try not to order just one.

More Great Taco Spots Worth Trying in Encinitas

This list could easily be ten, and we left off Agave Birrieria, Pavlos Tacos, and Roberto’s only because the brief was five. Encinitas is a taco town, and that’s part of why people fall in love with this stretch of coast. The 101 corridor is walkable in chunks, the parking situation varies (Juanita’s and Crack are easier, Taco Stand is its own adventure), and most of these are weekday-friendly when the lines thin out.
