After many years of living and working along this coast, Chelsea and I have a pretty good rotation of date-night spots dialed in. Our rules are simple. The food has to be good and reasonably clean, because we both feel better when dinner isn’t a gut bomb. We’re not big drinkers, so it’s less about the bar being huge and more about the fact that on the rare night we do splurge on a cocktail, it’s nice knowing it’ll be something special and worth it. And the place can’t be stuffy. If we can’t walk in wearing our good jeans and feel right at home, it’s not for us. Here are the coastal North County restaurants we actually go back to, plus the taco spot we hit when date night is more of a spontaneous thing.
Herb & Sea (Encinitas)
This is our Encinitas default, and has been since it opened. Herb & Sea is the coastal counterpart to Brian Malarkey’s Herb & Wood in Little Italy, set inside a thoughtfully preserved 1920s building just off the 101. The menu is seafood-forward and seasonal, built around a Fresh Catch program that spotlights local fishermen and underutilized species, supports conservation efforts, and features a raw bar, wood-fired plates, and a vegetable section that is genuinely worth ordering from. The food carries the night, but this is also one of those places where, if we do decide to splurge on one cocktail, it actually feels like a treat. The room is lively and a little LA-cool without ever tipping into pretentious, which is exactly the energy we want on a Friday. Get the mussel toast and whatever’s on the raw bar. 131 W D Street. Campfire (Carlsbad Village)
When we want to make a night of it up north, we go to Campfire. It lives in a converted mid-century Quonset hut on State Street, built around a 12-foot wood-burning hearth where most of the menu gets kissed by live fire. The cooking is seasonal and made for sharing, and the famous charred broccoli with chermoula, lime, and peanut has converted more than a few broccoli skeptics at our table. If the night calls for a cocktail, this is a fun place to have one, since the drinks echo the kitchen with smoked spices, grilled fruit, and roasted syrups. It’s smart casual and hip without being precious, and the meal ends with s’mores you toast yourself over live coals brought to the table. That part never gets old. 2725 State Street. Substack
Kai Ola (Leucadia, Carlsbad, and Solana Beach)
Some of our best date nights are low-key on purpose, and Kai Ola is made for those. It started as the original spot in Leucadia and has grown into three coastal locations serving premium Hawaiian-style sushi with Japanese roots. The whole feel is the opposite of fussy. As they put it, this is not fine dining and not about the scene, it’s about the fish, and sandals and board shorts are genuinely welcome. The fish is about as fresh as it gets, and there’s a solid sake list if you want to make the night feel a little special. You can usually walk right in. We bounce between all three depending on where we are: the original on North Coast Highway 101 in Leucadia, the Carlsbad Village location at 2998 State Street, and the Solana Beach spot at 112 S Cedros Avenue. Haggo’s Organic Taco (Leucadia)
Not every date night is a reservation. Sometimes it’s a Tuesday, we’re both wiped, and we just want a couple of tacos and to remember why we like each other. That’s a Haggo’s night. This little spot on the 101 in Leucadia serves organic, seed-oil-free Mexican food with grass-fed beef, free-range chicken, and wild-caught fish. The Cousteau Fish Taco is the move, beer-battered and fried in avocado oil, and it earned its fame on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. They pour local craft beer, wine, and margaritas, so if the night calls for one margarita, it’s right there. Nobody cares what you’re wearing.
